So the idea is for a special edition of the five books as a collectors box set of cloth bound hard backs with the opaque dust jackets containing all editorial information, publishers logo, type as a graphic element (titles, etc), digital illustration and a photographed physical object.
I had taken many photos of different objects, different ones for each title, however I chose in the end to go with this one and change the colours for each book to keep them all quite similar as part of the box set. There are slight differences in the outer dust jackets too, in the typography and each illustration is a different symbol. The type (as a graphic element) is very simple and subtle which it needed to be given the busyness of the pattern on the base. I wanted to keep the spine, front and back cover of the dust jacket as minimal as possible over the pattern, with all editorial info on the inside flaps.
I am happy with the finished result. I prefer books that dont have a lot of editorial information and quotes etc on the outside covers. The very first books I looked at for this project were Coralie Bickford-Smith’s clothbound series of the classics and her F.Scott Fitzgerald series for Penguin. I wanted to do something similar and I think I have achieved that, but with a personal twist that shows influence of Japanese graphic designers like Tadanori Yokoo etc.
